Can ChatGPT write a construction estimate?

In our test, the ChatGPT construction estimate was an outline. ChatGPT drafted it, but the answer had no local price source, no markup line and no signature block. An estimating app like SimplyWise Cost Estimator, which prices materials and labor from a photo and adjusts for regional cost differences, sends a professional, branded quote. That is the faster route to a quote you can stand behind.

We ran one job through both tools. The ChatGPT result is below, unedited.

The test: one drywall patch, same job

The job was a fist-size hole in a living room wall. We asked ChatGPT, logged out, on October 9, 2026 at 10:48 PM Pacific:

“Write a construction estimate for this job: Patch a fist-size hole in a living room drywall wall, tape, mud, sand and paint to match. Include materials, labor and a total price.”

This is one run, and ChatGPT answers vary. Here is what this ChatGPT construction estimate contained.

Part of the estimate What ChatGPT wrote
Materials 5 lines, $65.00 subtotal
Labor 4 lines, $275.00 subtotal
Total $340.00
Time 2 to 3 hours of hands-on labor, plus drying time
Sales tax line None
Markup or profit line None
Sources for prices None

It did include a scope of work with seven steps and a short list of terms. Those parts were solid. It also called the number “preliminary and subject to confirmation upon inspection.”

The prices are where it gets thin. The materials lines run from $5.00 for cleanup supplies to $25.00 for primer and paint. Labor runs from $25.00 for cleanup to $90.00 for sanding, priming and painting. None of them says where the price came from.

The same job in SimplyWise Cost Estimator

The app came back at $446.96, run on October 9, 2026. That is 9 line items, $340.00 labor and $66.33 materials. A 10 percent markup of $40.63 is already in. It asked 11 questions, including drywall type, wall texture and coats of mud.

What a general chatbot gets wrong

We list only what this one run showed. We make no claim about every answer ChatGPT could give.

  • No local prices. The answer never named a store, a zip code or a price source.
  • No questions about the wall. It did not ask about wall texture, hole location or access before it priced the work.
  • No markup. The total is materials plus labor. Nothing is added on top for overhead or profit.
  • No sales tax line. The materials subtotal went straight into the total.
  • Not a signable quote. It had no signature line and no client block.

Take the labor line. $275.00 against 2 to 3 hours of hands-on work is about $92 to $138 an hour, by our math. The answer never says whether that rate covers overhead or profit.

ChatGPT prompts that do help

ChatGPT is still handy for the thinking around a bid. Use it for the scope, the checklist and the client email, then price the job from real numbers.

  1. Give it the full job

Tell ChatGPT the room, the size of the repair, the finish and the access. The more you type, the less it has to guess.

  2. Ask for scope and line items only

Ask for the steps and a materials list with quantities. Leave the prices out of the first request.

  3. Price it from your own sources

Fill in prices from your supplier and your own hourly rate. Do not trust a price with no source.

  4. Add markup, tax and terms

Add your markup and sales tax yourself, then check the terms. In our run, neither line appeared.

Estimating apps that now work inside ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini

  • Jobber. On September 25, 2026, Jobber launched a plugin for ChatGPT and a connector for Claude. It answers questions from your Jobber data and can create a quote, but not edit one.
  • JobTread. Its connector lets ChatGPT, Claude and others create estimates, draft budgets and build schedules inside JobTread. No launch date is listed.
  • ServiceTitan. On October 6, 2026, ServiceTitan announced Homh, the homeowner side. Homeowners find and book selected ServiceTitan contractors through ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.

These connectors pass your app data to a chatbot. The chatbot still does not know local material prices or your markup. SimplyWise prices the job from a photo inside the app and sends a professional, branded quote.

When an estimating app is the better tool

Use ChatGPT when you want a scope of work or a checklist quickly. Use an estimating app when the number has to go to a client. SimplyWise turns a photo into an itemized estimate in about 6 seconds. It builds material, labor and fee lines, each with a unit, a quantity and a price per unit. Material prices are pulled from the closest Home Depot to the zip code registered in your app. Built-in markups sit on the estimate, and the client signs to approve.

SimplyWise Cost Estimator is $29.99/mo or $239.99/yr, about $20/mo on annual, with a 7-day free trial. Rated 4.8 on the App Store.
