Roofing contractor pricing starts at the wage floor

Every rate rests on a floor: what the labor actually pays. The median annual wage for roofers was $55,440 in May 2025, or $26.65 an hour, per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The bottom 10 percent earned under $37,460, while the top 10 percent cleared $81,720.

Look one line further, though. Roofers working for roofing contractors ran a median of $55,860, slightly above the occupation median.

Still, the wage is never the rate. Payroll taxes, workers compensation, general liability, the truck, the dump trailer, and every hour nobody bills all ride on the same billable hour. In short, that spread is labor burden.

Crew mix moves it too. Apprentices usually start at 50 percent of what journey workers receive, so a greener crew cuts wage cost and adds supervision time.

Roofing labor prices above its wage because of what it risks

Roofers have one of the highest rates of injuries and illnesses of all occupations, along with one of the highest rates of occupational fatalities, according to the same BLS data. Workers may slip or fall from scaffolds, ladders, or roofs.

That record follows the shop into its insurance renewal, and it prices every hour the crew works.

When a homeowner holds your number against a handyman’s, the gap is not greed. Coverage costs what the danger costs. Meanwhile, 73 percent of roofers work for roofing contractors and another 18 percent are self-employed, so nearly one roofer in five is carrying that premium with no payroll behind them.

Fall protection belongs on the estimate, not in a vague overhead line

OSHA sets the trigger low. Under 29 CFR 1926.501, each employee on a walking or working surface with an unprotected side or edge 6 feet or more above a lower level has to be protected by guardrail systems, safety net systems, or personal fall arrest systems. Residential construction carries that same 6 foot rule, and steep roofs call for guardrails with toeboards, nets, or fall arrest.

Low-slope roofing work gets more choices, including warning line combinations and, on roofs 50 feet or less in width, a safety monitoring system used alone.

Therefore the harnesses, the anchors, and the rigging time are job cost.

Skipping the gear is the expensive choice anyway. For penalties assessable after January 15, 2026, OSHA’s maximum is $16,550 per violation for a serious violation and $165,514 per violation for a willful or repeated one, plus $16,550 per day for failure to abate past the deadline.

The season you can bill in is shorter than the year

Roofing does not bill evenly. In northern states roofing work may be limited during the winter months, and crews usually do not work during inclement weather at all. During the busy summer months, by contrast, roofers may work overtime to finish jobs.

The rate you set in July has to carry the weeks nobody gets on a roof. Spread fixed cost across the hours you can realistically sell, not a flat 2,080.

The demand behind it is steady enough to plan against. Roofers held about 166,700 jobs in 2024, and employment is projected to grow 6 percent from 2024 to 2034, faster than the average for all occupations.

1. Start at the loaded hour

   Take the wage you actually pay, add taxes, workers comp, liability, vehicle, and unbilled time, then divide by the hours you can truly sell in a season.

2. Price the risk lines

   Also give fall protection gear, rigging time, and debris disposal a stated line instead of a silent markup.

3. Set the crew mix

   A journey worker and an apprentice do not cost the same hour, so price the crew you will actually send.

4. Apply margin last

   Margin goes on after labor, materials, and fees are on the page. Applied earlier, it hides a cost you forgot.
