Is a tight tile estimate worth the extra 20 minutes?

Yes, and it is not close. Two leaks kill most jobs: waste ordered too thin, and a substrate line quoted as if every floor were flat.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 52,600 tile and stone setters in 2024. Median pay for flooring installers and tile and stone setters is $52,000 a year, or $25.00 an hour. Plenty of tile estimates still get built by hand on a clipboard.

The 8 steps to estimate tile installation

1. Take off the area by surface

   Floor is length times width. Wall tile is wall length times tile height, minus the big openings. A shower gets measured face by face. A 5 ft by 8 ft bathroom gives 40 sq ft of floor. Keep every surface on its own line.

2. Add waste and overage by pattern

   Daltile recommends about 10 percent more tile from one dye lot, held as attic stock so future repairs match. Fireclay Tile calls for at least 15 percent on handmade tile and 20 percent on herringbone and chevron. Diagonal sets and mosaics cut heavier, so order above that.

3. Scope substrate, prep, and demo

   Prep is where tile margin lives or dies. Price backer board, waterproof membrane on every shower and tub surround, crack isolation over a cracked slab, self leveling on a wavy floor, and demo. The TCNA Handbook defines these assemblies.

4. Calculate thinset and grout from the chart

   Thinset coverage rides on the trowel notch, and the notch rides on tile size, so read the bag chart instead of guessing. Grout moves with tile size, joint width, and tile thickness. The table below is your starting point.

5. Add trim, edge profiles, and sundries

   Bullnose or metal edge profiles, transition strips, spacers, leveling clips, sealer, color matched caulk, and diamond blades. Name the edge treatment on the estimate. Every exposed edge is a scope decision, not a freebie.

6. Price labor per sq ft by surface

   Start from the BLS median of $25.00 an hour, then load it with payroll taxes, workers comp, liability, truck, fuel, and blades. Flat floor is the baseline, wall tile costs more, and a waterproofed shower sits highest.

7. Add site protection, disposal, and permits

   Floor protection, dust containment, debris hauling, and the dump fee never live inside a per sq ft tile rate. Tile demo is heavy, and most transfer stations bill by weight. Once the scope touches waterproofing or plumbing, confirm the permit locally.

8. Stack overhead and profit margin

   NAHB found residential remodelers spent 23.6 percent of revenue on operating expenses in 2024 and netted 6.3 percent. Use your own overhead rate, not that average, then price backward from the total.
