Carpet Installation Cost: Carpet, Pad, Strip and the Crew
Four lines carry a carpet installation cost, and only one is the carpet. The rest are cushion, strip and crew hours.

Carpet installation cost starts with a crew BLS counts on its own
Carpet installers get their own line in the federal wage data, separate from every other flooring trade. The Bureau of Labor Statistics keeps carpet installers as detailed occupation 47-2041, and the May 2025 wage release counted 13,780 of them at a $27.40 mean hourly wage. The median was $24.20, and the middle half earned $20.18 to $31.89.
The occupation next to it, 47-2042, is titled Floor Layers, Except Carpet, Wood, and Hard Tiles, and it pays a $29.69 mean. Its own name says it is not your crew. Pricing carpet hours off a general flooring wage, or off our trade wage table, borrows somebody else’s number.
These are wages, not billed rates. BLS collects straight-time gross pay and excludes overtime and the self-employed.
Carpet, cushion and strip are three separate lines
Carpet and cushion both sell by the square foot, which tempts crews to run them as one number. They move independently. On September 11, 2026 a specialist retailer listed broadloom carpet at $0.98 to $4.78 and eight cushions at $0.44 to $0.99. A building supplier the same day published no carpet price and held its cushion at $0.63, one figure at every branch.
| Line | Published range | Where it came from |
|---|---|---|
| Carpet, broadloom | $0.98 to $4.78 per sq ft | Carpet Exchange price pages |
| Carpet cushion | $0.44 to $0.99 per sq ft | Carpet Exchange; Sutherlands Shaw 7/16 in |
| Cushion by the roll | $202.67 to $267.73 per 160 sq ft | McCoy’s, Healthier Choice urethane |
| Tack strip, 48 in | $0.79 to $0.89 per piece | M-D 75312 at McCoy’s; Thermwell WM100W at Sutherlands |
| Installer wage | $27.40 per hour mean | BLS OEWS May 2025, occupation 47-2041 |
Take a 15 by 20 foot room, 300 square feet. Carpet at the blended band is $294 to $1,434. Cushion is another $132 to $297. The perimeter is 70 linear feet, and knocking out a three foot doorway leaves 67 feet, which is 17 strips at four feet each, so $13.43 to $15.13 of tack strip. Materials land between $439.43 and $1,746.13 before a single labor hour, and the spread comes from which carpet got picked.

Nobody publishes a waste factor for carpet installation cost
Cost guides quote one anyway. There is no source. The Carpet and Rug Institute publishes CRI 105, the residential installation standard, free, and across 47 pages it uses the word waste once, in a note about chalk lines. No percentage, no allowance, no overage table.
What it does say is that seams should be kept to a minimum, run the length of the area, and sit where natural light will not rake across them. Extra carpet is a function of where the seams fall. A takeoff answers it. A percentage hides it.
The practical read: if a supplier quotes a flat waste percentage, ask which seam plan it assumes. A hallway and a square bedroom of the same area do not eat the same carpet.
Put the whole floor on one estimate
Four lines, and the customer wants one number. SimplyWise Cost Estimator turns a photo into an itemized, branded estimate in about 6 seconds, a unit, quantity and price on every line. $29.99/mo or $239.99/yr, about $20/mo on annual, with a 7-day free trial.
What the installation standard actually requires
CRI 105 is short, free and specific, and most of it costs money on the bid. Tack strips have to be at least 1 inch wide and 1/4 inch thick, and a nailed or stapled strip needs two fasteners per piece. The gully, the gap between strip and wall, has to be slightly less than the carpet thickness and never over 3/8 inch.
Cushion should not exceed 7/16 inch, and ignoring the cushion recommendations can void a manufacturer warranty. Stretch-in work has to be power stretched, and where the maker gives no stretch instruction, tufted carpet with a synthetic backing gets a minimum of 1 percent stretch in length and in width. Seam edges get sealed, at least a 1/8 inch bead at an uncovered transition.
None of it is optional in a bid that holds. A crew that skips the stretcher quotes lower and is gone before the ripples show.
Build a carpet installation cost in this order
-
Measure the floor the carpet crosses
Take the room wall to wall, then add closets, thresholds and any covered stair tread. Carpet and cushion price off that number.
-
Price carpet and cushion as two lines
Both sell by the square foot and move independently. A cheap carpet over a dense cushion is a different bid than the reverse.
-
Count tack strip off the perimeter
Add the wall lengths, subtract doorways, divide by four feet a strip and round up. It is the only line that runs on linear feet.
-
Put crew hours on the right wage
Start from the published wage for 47-2041, layer burden, overhead and margin, and only then call it a rate you quote.

Carpet installation cost: common questions
What does carpet installation cost per square foot?
Carpet ran $0.98 to $4.78 a square foot at one retailer on September 11, 2026, cushion another $0.44 to $0.99. Labor sits on top, quoted by the crew hour.
What do carpet installers earn?
BLS gives carpet installers their own code, 47-2041. In May 2025 the mean hourly wage was $27.40 and the median $24.20, the middle half $20.18 to $31.89.
How much carpet do I buy for waste?
Neither the Carpet and Rug Institute standard nor any maker we reached publishes a waste percentage. The seam plan for the room decides it.
How thick should the cushion be?
CRI 105 states that cushion thickness for residential carpet installations should not exceed 7/16 inch. Thicker can void a manufacturer warranty.
