How the flooring cost calculator works

Three moves: length times width for floor area, a waste allowance on top, a price band for the material. Out comes the square footage to order and its cost.

Waste is not optional: every wall cut throws away part of a plank. Presets carry 10% straight and 15% diagonal or herringbone; the custom field takes a manufacturer minimum 5 or a cut-heavy 20.

Every band is blended from two national retailers, not one: LL Flooring (August 27, 2026) and Floor and Decor (August 28, 2026). Both are regular prices, not sale prices. Sales run deep in flooring, so the band is the walk-in ceiling.

Worked example: a 15 by 20 living room

Floor area is 300 sq ft. Herringbone, so waste is 15%: order 345 sq ft. In solid hardwood at $3.69 to $8.99 per sq ft, that is $1,273.05 to $3,101.55 in material. Underlayment, trim, and labor are separate lines.

What flooring costs per square foot

National regular prices per sq ft, blended across LL Flooring and Floor and Decor: laminate $0.89 to $3.99, vinyl plank $0.99 to $4.49, engineered hardwood $1.99 to $8.99, solid hardwood $3.69 to $8.99.

One store is not a market. Floor and Decor opens engineered at $1.99 and solid at $3.69, under LL Flooring’s floor; LL Flooring carries vinyl plank to $4.49. Inside each band, 7mm laminate sits at the bottom and 12mm waterproof boards at the top. Underlayment adds $59.99 to $64.99 per 100 sq ft roll when the plank has no attached pad.

The waste math: straight, diagonal, herringbone

A straight lay only cuts at the walls. Angle the planks and every course starts and ends with an offcut; herringbone forces them across the field. Bruce requires adding 5% for cutting and grading, 10% for diagonal. Mannington plans 5 to 15% by product. Our tile basis: 10 straight, 15 diagonal, 15 to 20 herringbone.

The presets sit at the planning end of those figures, so a thirsty layout never leaves you short. Leftovers are not waste: keep a sealed box for repairs.

Why this page will not guess your box count

Box coverage is set per product, not per industry. Across the listings behind this calculator it runs 10.44 to 44.46 sq ft per box: herringbone solid hardwood ships 10.44 to the box, glue-down vinyl plank 44.46. One box count for all flooring is a constant that does not exist. Order by square footage, divide by your box label coverage, round up.
