AWG Meaning: What the Wire Gauge Number Actually Tells You
The AWG meaning starts with a size. The size sets an ampacity. A different code section sets the breaker.

What does AWG mean?
AWG stands for American Wire Gauge, the sizing system for round electrical conductors in the United States. The number runs backward: the smaller the number, the larger the wire. A 14 AWG solid copper conductor measures 0.0641 inches across, a 4 AWG measures 0.2043 inches. The gauge is a diameter, not an amp rating. That is the practical AWG meaning.

Why the numbers run backward
The scale is geometric. Six gauge numbers doubles the diameter: 14 AWG is 0.0641 inches, 8 AWG is 0.1285 inches, a ratio of 2.005. Two gauge numbers move the diameter about 26 percent and the cross section about 59 percent, because area follows the square.
The two standards behind the AWG meaning
Two documents govern an AWG size. One defines how big it is. The other decides what you may do with it.
ASTM B258 defines the size
ASTM B258 is the Standard Specification for Standard Nominal Diameters and Cross-Sectional Areas of AWG Sizes of Solid Round Wires Used as Electrical Conductors. Its scope covers the diameters and cross sections of every AWG size, plus equations for mass, resistance and rated strength. It says nothing about amperes.
NEC Table 310.16 sets the ampacity
Table 310.16 of the 2023 National Electrical Code prints three ampacity columns per size, one per insulation temperature rating. Copper and aluminum sit on different rows.
| Conductor | 60°C | 75°C | 90°C |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14 AWG copper | 15 A | 20 A | 25 A |
| 12 AWG copper | 20 A | 25 A | 30 A |
| 10 AWG copper | 30 A | 35 A | 40 A |
| 12 AWG aluminum | 15 A | 20 A | 25 A |
You rarely get the 90°C column. Under 110.14(C)(1)(a), terminations on circuits rated 100 amperes or less, or marked for 14 AWG through 1 AWG, are used only for 60°C conductors, or for higher rated conductors whose ampacity is figured at the 60°C value, unless the equipment is listed for the higher rating.
NEC 240.4(D) sets the breaker
This is the section that decides the breaker. 240.4(D) caps overcurrent protection on small conductors, 18 AWG through 10 AWG, whatever the ampacity table prints. Copper: 15 amperes on 14 AWG, 20 on 12, 30 on 10. Aluminum and copper clad aluminum: 15 amperes on 12 AWG, 25 on 10. Nothing larger than 10 AWG is capped by this section. The note under Table 310.16 points at it and adds that the cap applies after ambient and bundling corrections.
A worked example, start to breaker
Six current carrying 14 AWG copper THHN conductors share a raceway in an attic near 100°F. THHN is rated 90°C.
- Table 310.16, 90°C copper, 14 AWG: 25 amperes.
- Ambient correction for 36°C to 40°C on a 90°C conductor is 0.91. 25 x 0.91 = 22.75 amperes.
- Adjustment for four to six current carrying conductors is 80 percent. 22.75 x 0.80 = 18.2 amperes.
- 110.14(C)(1)(a) holds the termination to its listed column: 15 amperes on 60°C gear, 20 on 75°C gear.
- 240.4(D) caps 14 AWG copper at 15 amperes after those corrections.
The 18.2 loses. The 20 loses. The breaker is 15 amperes. Anyone quoting one number for 14 AWG skipped four steps.
Where the AWG meaning matters on a job
On the takeoff
Wire is bought by gauge and by the foot, so the gauge drives the material line. Our electrical estimate template keeps it off the device counts.
At rough inspection
The inspector reads the conductor markings against the breaker in the panel. A 14 AWG conductor on a 20 amp breaker is a correction notice.
In the change that costs you
An added load often forces the next size up, which changes conduit fill and sometimes the breaker. That is a change order. If the drawings are silent, send a request for information first.
Common mistakes
Quoting one ampacity for a gauge
Most sizes carry three published ampacities, and the termination limit usually forces the lowest. Saying 12 AWG is 25 amperes is wrong more often than right.
Merging copper and aluminum
Different rows, different caps. A 12 AWG aluminum conductor is a 15 ampere conductor under 240.4(D). Minimum branch circuit size differs too: 14 AWG copper, 12 AWG aluminum.
Skipping the derates
Ambient temperature and bundling multiply against the table value first. In the attic above they were not what governed, but bundle ten conductors instead of six and the 50 percent factor drops 14 AWG copper to 11.4 amperes, under the cap.

Read the AWG meaning in four steps
-
Read the number as a size
Smaller number, larger conductor. Confirm the material: copper and aluminum never share a row.
-
Find the insulation temperature rating
THHN is 90°C, THW is 75°C, TW is 60°C. That rating picks your column.
-
Apply ambient and bundling corrections
Multiply the table value by the ambient factor, then by the adjustment factor for more than three conductors.
-
Take the lower of the termination limit and 240.4(D)
The termination rule pulls you down a column. The small conductor cap is a hard ceiling.

Common questions about AWG meaning
The number itself
What does AWG stand for?
American Wire Gauge. It is the sizing system for round electrical conductors in the United States, and the number describes diameter, not amperage.
Is a higher AWG number a bigger wire?
No. The scale runs backward. A 14 AWG conductor is 0.0641 inches across and a 4 AWG is 0.2043 inches.
Amps and breakers
How many amps can 12 AWG copper carry?
Table 310.16 prints 20 amperes at 60 degrees C, 25 at 75 and 30 at 90. The termination rule usually forces the lower column, and 240.4(D) caps the breaker at 20 amperes.
Why is 14 AWG protected at 15 amps when the table says 25?
Because 240.4(D) is a separate limit on small conductors. It caps 14 AWG copper at 15 amperes after every ambient and bundling correction.
Does aluminum use the same AWG sizes?
Yes, the same sizes, but a different row and a different cap. A 12 AWG aluminum conductor is limited to 15 amperes under 240.4(D).
