Ductless or ducted, and why the line matters

Mini split installation cost prices a ductless system. Outdoor condenser, indoor heads, a line set per head, condensate, a circuit. Replacing central air on existing ductwork is a different job, priced in our ac installation cost guide.

AC Units For Less, read September 14, 2026. Each row is a complete MRCOOL DIY system: condenser, head, 25 foot line set, one box. The DIY line ships pre charged on a quick connect set for a homeowner to hang. Gear a crew evacuates and charges prices differently.

Capacity does not price in a straight line. Going from 12,000 to 18,000 Btu adds $550, and the 12,000 runs on 115 volts. Going from 24,000 to 36,000 adds only $440 for twice the step.

These are fifth generation systems on R-454B. The superseded fourth generation R-410A line still turns up at other suppliers, and a clearance price on discontinued stock is not the market.

Multi zone, and what nobody posted

The multi zone story is thinner, and we say so rather than fill it in. A fourth generation R-410A five zone condenser posted at $2,814, outdoor unit only, and no fifth generation multi zone price reached us. The two, three and four zone condensers returned no price, nor did the 9,000 Btu head.

Line set and line hide, the second biggest number

Every run past the included 25 feet needs its own set, and it has to match the generation. The fifth generation R-454B systems above take R-454B sets, sold by head size. For an 18K head the quarter by half inch set posted at three lengths. A 12K head takes a quarter by three eighths set instead, $502 for 35 feet, and a 24K or 36K head takes a three eighths by five eighths set, $271 for 16 feet.

Look at the steps. The 19 feet between 16 and 35 cost $271, and the 35 foot set adds the DIY Pro cable the 16 foot set lacks. The 15 feet between 35 and 50 cost $89. Same store, same head size, and still no price a foot.

The federal floor is different on ductless

Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, section 430.32, sets split system heat pumps at 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2.

That floor is national.

Labor is a wage, not a billing rate

The federal wage survey for May 2025 covers 409,670 HVAC mechanics. Hourly median $29.33, 90th percentile $45.78.

One 18,000 Btu zone, priced from stated inputs

One head, bracket, 12 feet of line hide, and a 35 foot run replacing the 25 foot set in the box rather than adding to it.

That is not a bid. The circuit, disconnect, condensate and permit sit outside it, as does burden, overhead and margin.

What we will not price, and why

• Two, three and four zone condensers. All returned no price.
• The electrical side. The pullout disconnects we checked are no longer stocked.
• Rebates and credits. None is a price, and nothing here is netted against one.
• Crew installed ductless. Every figure here is the DIY pre charged line.

2. Measure the real run, then buy the posted length

   Buy the next posted length up, never a rate a foot.

3. Quote the mounting and the line hide

   A bracket ran $89, twelve feet of cover $148.

4. Add the hours at your loaded rate

   The federal median wage of $29.33 is payroll, not what you charge.
