Cost of gutter guards starts with the type

Guards are not one product. A foam wedge, a bristle cylinder, a mesh strip and a hinged steel panel all sit in the same gutter. The prices are not close.

Better still, guards sell in packs, and the seller prints the feet each pack covers next to its price. Divide for a real rate.

What each guard type costs per foot

Every figure is a pack price divided by the coverage the seller states.

Type Form Per foot Sellers
Vinyl screen 20 ft roll or 3 ft snap in panel $0.25 to $1.00 Two
Aluminum screen 20 ft roll or 3 ft lock on panel $0.62 to $1.66 One
Foam insert Wedge filling the channel, 4 ft $1.75 to $1.79 One
Steel hinged Convex galvanized panel, 3 ft $2.02 to $2.83 Two
Brush insert Bristle cylinder, 30 ft pack $3.67 One
Micro mesh Fine screen on a rigid frame None published None

The steel hinged panel is one part at two sellers. Vinyl screen is the same form at two sellers, not the same part. Treat every other row as single source.

What we could not price

Micro mesh is the type we most wanted to price and the one nobody sells you straight. The two retail catalogs cited here list none. The trade supply house hides prices behind a login. The rest were installers pricing their own work.

What the price does not include

Three costs land on the invoice and none sit in the table. The gutter gets cleaned and inspected first, because you are sealing in whatever is there. Rotten fascia and tired hangers surface once you are up the ladder.

Access is the third. A second story or a steep pitch changes the hours, and hours are most of this job.

What the labor side pays

The occupation is Roofers. The May 2025 national median is $26.65 an hour, the mean $27.95. Across 135,490 roofers the 25th percentile sits at $22.24 and the 90th at $39.29. Crews running a helper price off Construction Laborers, median $22.66.

Those are wages an employer pays, and the survey skips the self employed. Your billed rate sits above either.

Guards against a cleaning bill, worked out

Our gutter cleaning prices guide puts single story work at $1.09 to $2.30 a foot from the two companies publishing a rate, and West Virginia University Extension says gutters want cleaning twice a year.

Run 180 feet at the low end and two visits cost about $392 a year. Vinyl screen on that roofline, material plus four crew hours at the median wage, lands between $151 and $286.

A worked illustration off stated inputs, not market data. It assumes both visits stop, and no maker publishes a count of visits saved.

What guards do not solve

Guards reduce maintenance. They do not end it. Grit, granules and pine needles still land on top, and seed pods germinate in open mesh.

Our cleaning guide carries the number that settles it. One national company adds $50 to $150 to a visit to pull guards and refit them.

Price a guard job in four steps

  1. Measure the run, pick the type

Linear feet of gutter is the measurement, and type sets the rate.

  2. Count whole packs, not feet

Packs run 3, 4, 20 and 30 ft, so round up and price the offcut.

  3. Add the clean, the repair, the access

The pre clean, hanger work and ladder time are separate lines.

  4. Put crew hours on at your rate

Start at the wage, then add burden, truck and margin.
