What a drywall sub actually wants from an app

Not a quantity. You can get a quantity off a wheel and a napkin. What you want is the number that goes on the bid, with labor and finish separated, in time to hand it to the GC before the walkthrough breaks up.

That is the whole test. If the tool gives you board count and then leaves you to price it in a spreadsheet at 9pm, it did not save you the evening. It moved it.

Phone takeoff or plan takeoff

Both are legitimate. They just win on different jobs.

The pattern is simple. Where a drawing set exists and governs, take off the drawings. Where it does not, or where it lies, the phone is the faster and more honest source.

How the phone takeoff runs on a walkthrough

1. Open a job per space, not per building

   One job per room or per suite keeps the line items readable when the GC asks you to break out a floor.

2. Shoot walls and ceiling separately

   Ceiling board and wall board price differently and hang differently. Give each its own frame so each gets its own lines.

3. Type or say the scope the camera misses

   Board thickness, fire rating, the finish level you agreed to, corner bead type, and stilt work. Voice input handles it if you are carrying a light.

4. Read the itemized estimate

   Material, labor, and fee lines come back separated in about 6 seconds. Each line carries a unit, a quantity, and a price per unit.

5. Send it before you leave the floor

   Set markup, then hand over a branded quote the client signs to approve. The GC gets a number the same day.

What a drywall takeoff app will not do for you

Two limits worth knowing before you rely on it.

First, plans. SimplyWise takes a blueprint or floor plan upload, and that is useful context, but it does not pull measurements off the drawing. If a dimension matters, put it in the description. Anyone who tells you a phone app scales an uploaded set for free is selling something.

Second, depth capture range. This is a phone hardware limit, not an app one, and the SimplyWise room scan runs on a Pro iPhone. Google puts the most accurate band for depth on Android at half a meter to about five meters from the scene, and Apple states its LiDAR Scanner “measures the distance to surrounding objects up to 5 meters away”. A twenty foot warehouse span sits past both of those accuracy bands. Break big spaces into bays and capture them in pieces.

The rate the number has to clear

Median pay for drywall installers, ceiling tile installers, and tapers was $59,780 a year, or $28.74 an hour, in May 2025, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Split out, drywall and ceiling tile installers ran $58,930 and tapers ran $68,270.

That gap is the point. Finish labor prices above hanging labor, so a bid that folds taping into a single board rate is quietly underpricing the harder half. BLS also puts tapers in nonresidential building construction at $68,140, against $58,370 for tapers working under painting and wall covering contractors.
