Plumbing Service Pricing Guide: How Plumbers Price Work in 2026
How plumbing service pricing actually works. A trip charge, a flat rate per task, loaded labor, and a markup on parts.

Flat rate or hourly
Plumbing shops price one of two ways. Flat rate quotes one fixed price for a defined task before work starts. The number comes from a price book carrying labor time, parts, markup, overhead, and profit. Most residential shops run flat rate because it closes faster and rewards a fast tech.
Hourly bills a labor rate plus parts. Residential hourly commonly lands between $75 and $200 an hour. It survives on diagnostics and open scope work. Quote flat rate on anything you have done a hundred times.
The trip charge
The service call fee covers showing up and diagnosing. It commonly runs $50 to $150. That pays for windshield time, fuel, scheduling, and the diagnostic hour. Most shops credit it toward the repair when the customer approves the work. A published trip fee also filters out the caller collecting five free numbers.
What common plumbing jobs run
These are ranges a residential shop tends to quote. Treat them as a sanity check on your price book, not a sourced dataset. Local rates and site conditions move the real number.
| Job | Range | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Faucet or fixture replacement | $150 to $400 | Access, shutoff condition |
| Toilet replacement, new flange | $200 to $600 | Flange repair, supply line |
| Drain clearing, sink or main | $150 to $600 | Snake vs hydro jet |
| Leak repair, accessible line | $150 to $700 | Wall opening, pipe material |
| Water heater replacement, tank | $1,200 to $3,500 | Gas vs electric, permit |
| Tankless water heater install | $2,500 to $6,000 | Gas line sizing, venting |
| Whole home repipe | $4,000 to $15,000 | Home size, wall access |
| Garbage disposal replacement | $150 to $450 | Unit tier, wiring |

What plumbing labor costs by region
Plumbing is a $208.1 billion industry in the U.S. this year. Nearly all of it gets priced one truck at a time, and labor is the biggest input. The cleanest public read on the regional gap is the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns file. It reports employment and annual payroll for plumbing and heating contractors in every state. Rolled up to the four Census regions:
| Region | Establishments | Average annual payroll per employee | Index vs U.S. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northeast | 21,410 | $79,739 | 108 |
| Midwest | 21,094 | $76,636 | 104 |
| South | 42,610 | $65,659 | 89 |
| West | 26,093 | $80,066 | 109 |
National average is $73,693 of annual payroll per employee. Source: U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023 state file, NAICS 238220, verified live 2026-08-08. Figures are our roll up of the state rows. The code covers heating and air conditioning contractors too, so read it as a labor cost signal.
Use it as an index, not a price. Apply your region’s number to a national price book before you trust it.
Loaded labor and materials markup
Every flat rate number traces back to a loaded labor rate. The mistake that sinks shops is pricing labor at the bare wage. A loaded rate stacks the base wage plus payroll taxes, workers comp, liability, the truck, fuel, and tools.
Most shops apply a multiplier of roughly 2x to 3x on the base wage. That absorbs what the customer never sees: idle truck time, unbilled drive time, and dispatch.
Parts carry a markup too, commonly 1.5x to 3x over cost. Small fittings carry the higher multiples, a water heater a lower one. The markup pays for sourcing, truck stock, and warranty exposure.
After hours work and permits
Nights, weekends, and holidays commonly run 1.5x to 2x the standard rate. Some shops add a flat dispatch fee. State it in writing before the visit. Nobody should negotiate price at midnight in a flooding basement.
Water heater swaps, repipes, and gas line work need a permit. Pull it, show the fee as its own line, and do the same for any code driven upgrade.

Plumbing service pricing: common questions
Do plumbers charge flat rate or hourly?
Most residential shops price flat rate by task from a price book. The customer sees one fixed number before work starts. Hourly survives on diagnostics and open ended troubleshooting. Residential hourly commonly lands between $75 and $200 an hour, a typical quoted range, not survey data.
How much does it cost to replace a water heater?
A like for like tank replacement commonly runs $1,200 to $3,500 with parts and labor. A tankless install runs $2,500 to $6,000. These are typical quoted ranges, not survey data. Check them against your price book. The spread comes from gas vs electric, code upgrades such as an expansion tank, the permit, and removal.
Does plumbing pricing change by region?
Yes, mostly through labor. Census County Business Patterns data for 2023 covers plumbing and heating contractors. Average annual payroll per employee is $80,066 in the West and $79,739 in the Northeast. The Midwest runs $76,636 and the South $65,659, on a $73,693 national average.
