"EDIT: We've been back 2 more times since then, both in the mid afternoon. A) They only give appointments for certain transactions. B) Both times, the place was almost empty, and we didn't have to wait more than 10 minutes. So the original post below, based on the Monday after thanksgiving , is probably not typical.\n\nThe statement that 'People typically spend 25 min to 1 hr here' is seriously skewed by people with appointments vs walk-ins. Just left after waiting 40 minutes. There were ~35 other people already there, and they called 2 numbers the whole time. So: make an appointment, (unless you have an emergency, since it can take up to 21 days to get one)."

How do I report a death?

Funeral homes typically handle reporting of a death to the SSA. However, you will need to provide the funeral home with the deceased’s Social Security number for them to do so. Note that deaths cannot be reported online. If you want to report the person’s death yourself, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. You also visit your local Social Security office in person.
