"After adopting a child, I visited the ssa office in Melbourne, FL. It took 10 months, multiple visits, and multiple phone calls to get a ssn, including a call from a supervisor who called out of the blue and yelled at me after one of her staff members filed paperwork incorrectly. Unfortunately after 14 months the paperwork is still incorrect. BTW... after adopting a child and filing in the office in Albuquerque, New Mexico, it was roughly 1.5 hours, most of which was waiting time and everything was done correctly. It can be done, but not at this office."

"Our wait wasn't as long as some of these other reviews... It was early Friday afternoon and we waited maybe 30 minutes without an appointment. The gentleman that helped us with what we needed to do was very friendly and we didn't have an issues at all. We ended up not having one of the pieces of information we needed for one of the cards we were getting. How do I report a death?

Funeral homes typically handle reporting of a death to the SSA. However, you will need to provide the funeral home with the deceased’s Social Security number for them to do so. Note that deaths cannot be reported online. If you want to report the person’s death yourself, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
