"Went here for a name change after I got married. Got here about 15–20 minutes after the office opened. Initially worried because the line for security was out of the door, but it went by quickly. Obtaining a number was from an automated machine. Waited maybe 20 minutes for my number to be called & the entire process took about 5-10 minutes since I brought all the necessary documents. How do I apply for Social Security benefits?

How do I report a death?

Funeral homes typically handle reporting of a death to the SSA. However, you will need to provide the funeral home with the deceased’s Social Security number for them to do so. Note that deaths cannot be reported online. If you want to report the person’s death yourself, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. You also visit your local Social Security office in person.
