It goes in a hallway or other readily accessible place, with at least 30 inches of unobstructed headroom above it. R807.1 governs getting a person into an attic. A separate mechanical section governs getting a technician and a cabinet to the equipment. They use different numbers. One does not satisfy the other.<\/p>\n<p>R807.1 itself closes by pointing at M1305.1.2 for attics with mechanical equipment. Minnesota&#8217;s amended R807.1 and a Texas state technical bulletin make the same split, sending attic equipment to the mechanical rules.<\/p>\n<h3>Where R807.1 stops<\/h3>\n<p>R807.1 is about the hole and the headroom. It says nothing about a floor, a route, room to work, or light. Satisfy it and you have a scuttle.<\/p>\n<h2>Rule one: R807.1, the building side<\/h2>\n<p>The 2021 IRC prints four numbers. The rough-framed opening is not less than 22 inches by 30. In a wall it is 22 wide by 30 high. In a ceiling, attic headroom is 30 inches at some point above the opening, measured from the bottom of the ceiling framing. Location is a hallway or somewhere with ready access.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pm__callout\">\n<p>The 2021 wording is <strong>not less than<\/strong> 30 square feet, so exactly 30 triggers. Older editions and some state amendments say <strong>exceed<\/strong> 30, where exactly 30 does not. Check which edition your jurisdiction adopted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Rule two: the attic appliance rule<\/h2>\n<p>The 2021 IRC carries this at M1305.1.2. M1305.1.2&#8217;s 20 by 30 is a clear dimension, and only a floor. The opening also has to pass the largest appliance, so the cabinet sets the size.<\/p>\n<p>The rule also wants a light on a switch at the passageway opening, and a receptacle at or near the appliance. That is M1305.1.2.1 in the 2021 IRC. Both triggers are met.<\/p>\n<h3>No equipment up there<\/h3>\n<p>You owe one opening. Frame it 22 by 30 in a hallway ceiling. Confirm 30 inches of clear headroom above it, trim it, hang a cover.<\/p>\n<h3>An air handler 18 feet in<\/h3>\n<p>Now M1305.1.2 governs. The cabinet measures 21 by 46 inches. A 22 by 30 rough frame will not pass it, so the opening grows. You owe a passageway 30 inches high by 22 wide the whole run. At 18 feet you are inside the 20 foot limit, and the unit is too far in to service through the hatch, so neither exception helps you.<\/p>\n<p>You also owe continuous solid flooring 24 inches wide across those 18 feet. That is 18 times 2, or 36 square feet of decking. Add a level 30 by 30 platform, a light and a receptacle.<\/p>\n<h2>Common mistakes<\/h2>\n<h3>Quoting a scuttle when the job is equipment access<\/h3>\n<p>A compliant hatch is a fraction of the scope. The catwalk, platform and electrical are the money.<\/p>\n<h3>Measuring the frame instead of the hole<\/h3>\n<p>R807.1 speaks in rough framing. The appliance rule speaks in clear opening. Trim eats the difference.<\/p>\n<h3>Forgetting the cabinet has to come out<\/h3>\n<p>The opening is sized by the largest appliance, not the table minimum.
