It covers door and window casing, baseboard, crown, wainscot, stair parts, built-ins, closet systems and hardware. Under Title 16 of the California Code of Regulations, a C-5 Framing and Rough Carpentry contractor &#8220;performs any form work, framing or rough carpentry necessary to construct framed structures,&#8221; including sub-flooring, siding, roof decking and sheathing.<\/p>\n<p>A C-6 Cabinet, Millwork and Finish Carpentry contractor &#8220;makes cabinets, cases, sashes, doors, trims, nonbearing partitions and other items of finish carpentry by cutting, surfacing, joining, gluing and fabricating wood or other products&#8230;&#8221; and also &#8220;places, erects, and finishes such cabinets and millwork in structures.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That is a California rule, not a national one. Carpentry licensing is state and local, and several states do not license it at all. But the line it draws is the one every job site uses: rough carpentry builds what holds the building up, finish carpentry installs what you look at.<\/p>\n<h2>What the scope actually covers<\/h2>\n<h3>The finish carpentry list<\/h3>\n<p>Door casing and jambs. Window casing, stool and apron. Baseboard and shoe. Crown and chair rail. Wainscot. Stair treads, risers, skirtboards, newels, balusters and handrail. Built-in shelving. Closet systems. Door and cabinet hardware.<\/p>\n<h3>Where millwork and cabinetmaking split off<\/h3>\n<p>Millwork is the manufactured product, the profiles and doors and cabinets produced in a shop. Cabinetmaking is building those pieces. Finish carpentry is fitting and installing them on site, which is why California folds all three into one classification.<\/p>\n<h2>What the labor data says, honestly<\/h2>\n<p>There is no federal occupation called finish carpenter. The Standard Occupational Classification puts the work inside Carpenters, SOC 47-2031, and O*NET lists Finish Carpenter and Rough Carpenter side by side as reported titles for that one code.<\/p>\n<p>So a wage figure here describes carpenters as a whole. The May 2025 national median is $29.12 an hour, series OEUN000000000000047203108, against a mean of $31.55 across 670,090 carpenters. The 25th percentile is $23.32, the 75th $36.94.<\/p>\n<p>Those are wages employers pay employees. The survey excludes the self employed, so a one truck trim shop is not in it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pm__callout\">\n<p><strong>The number nobody publishes.<\/strong> A trim rate per linear foot is the figure every search wants, and no allowed authority states one. Every version we found traces back to a lead generation cost guide, which is not a source. So this page prints no installed price per foot and no material price.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>A worked example on one bedroom<\/h2>\n<p>Take a 12 by 14 foot bedroom with one door and one window. The perimeter is twice 12 plus twice 14, so 52 linear feet. Subtract 3 feet for the door opening, leaving 49 feet of baseboard.<\/p>\n<p>Casing a standard interior door takes about 17.5 feet a side, two legs and a head, so 35 feet for both sides, hall side included. The window with stool and apron runs about 18 feet. Total trim is 49 plus 35 plus 18, so 102 linear feet.<\/p>\n<p>Put your own hours against it. At 8 hours for one carpenter, the May 2025 median of $29.12 gives $232.96 in wage, or $2.28 a foot in wage alone. The hours are your number, not a published one. Trim before paint on stain grade, after the first coat on paint grade.<\/p>\n<h3>What gets inspected<\/h3>\n<p>Most of it, nothing. Trim is not a code inspection item the way framing is. The exception is stair parts: handrails, guards and balustrades are code regulated and they are on the final inspection like anything else.
