It\u2019s kind of like a driver\u2019s license picture\u2014it may not be your favorite, but it serves the purpose. But there are times when people need a new Social Security number. People fleeing domestic abuse, people who have been the victims of identity fraud, or people whose numbers are being used by others may have a legitimate reason to change their numbers. The fact is, changing your number can impact how you show up in banking systems, drivers\u2019 license bureaus and other places, so the Social Security Administration requires people to apply in person: an option that\u2019s not available when offices are shut down because of COVID-19.<\/p><p>The Social Security system doesn\u2019t make it easy to change your number, for many reasons. Some people only want to change their number to escape debt or prosecution from a crime. Even if your reason for wanting to change your number is legitimate, several problems can arise from giving people a new Social Security number. For example, you may have trouble getting a U.S. Passport or getting state aid because it\u2019s more difficult to verify your identity. And your Social Security number is already part of your record for so many things including medical records, business records, and legal records, so much of your history connects to that number. Finally, the SSA system works by pairing one person to one number. If the numbers were too easy to change the system would be less effective. But if you really need to change your number, this is how you do it:\u00a0<\/p><h3><strong>1. Have one of the acceptable reasons for a new Social Security number<\/strong><\/h3><p>The Social Security Administration will only dole out new numbers to people in specific circumstances including:<\/p><ul><li>Sequential numbers assigned to members of the same family are causing problems. This doesn\u2019t happen that often, but it does happen.<\/li><li>You\u2019re a victim of identity theft and you continue to have problems because you\u2019re using the number that was employed in the fraud.<\/li><li>You\u2019re being<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/pubs\/EN-05-10093.pdf\">\u00a0harassed, abused, or your life is in danger<\/a>\u00a0as in domestic abuse situations.<\/li><li>You have religious or cultural objections to certain numbers or digits in the original number.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-452c52a elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"452c52a\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a92c72c\" data-id=\"a92c72c\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f9a720a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f9a720a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3 dir=\"ltr\"><b>2. Identity Fraud: Take other steps first<\/b><\/h3><p dir=\"ltr\">Just having your Social Security number stolen or lost doesn\u2019t constitute a reason to get a new number. In fact, the Social Security Administration points out that even if you are the victim of identity fraud, just getting a new number won\u2019t solve the problem. Instead, you must first follow the recommendations listed in the SSA publication<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/pubs\/EN-05-10064.pdf\">\u00a0Identity Theft and Your Social Security Number.\u00a0<\/a>Protecting your credit and other records requires you to take many steps including contacting the Internal Revenue Service and Federal Trade Commission, and Internet Crime Complaint Center. Showing that you\u2019ve taken all those steps will be an important consideration when the SSA considers granting you a new number.<\/p><h3><b>3<\/b>.\u00a0<b>Get documentation to support your need<\/b><\/h3><p>You need to write a statement about why you need the new Social Security number; the Social Security office may be able to help you with this. Your statement must include current, credible, third-party evidence of your claim. For example, if you\u2019re changing your number to protect you from domestic violence you may need<\/p><ul><li>Police reports.<\/li><li>Medical records of injuries.<\/li><li>Restraining orders.<\/li><li>Letters from shelters, counselors, friends or family members with direct knowledge of the situation.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><p>If you\u2019re requesting new numbers for any children, you\u2019ll need to show documents proving you have custody of the children and documentation of their ages, identities, and U.S. citizenship.<\/p><p>If you need a new number because you have religious or cultural objections to numbers or digits in your original number, you would need written documentation from a religious group with whom you have an established relationship.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a220615 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a220615\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-b570a3c\" data-id=\"b570a3c\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-a90496e elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a90496e\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-c6d4a80\" data-id=\"c6d4a80\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4ff509a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4ff509a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Social Security Administration won\u2019t necessarily issue you a new number just because you have experienced identity theft. Gather documents that prove your identity<\/b><\/h3><p>These must be<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/ssnumber\/ss5doc.htm\">\u00a0original documents<\/a>\u00a0establishing:<\/p><ul><li>U.S. citizenship or work-authorized immigration status<\/li><li>Age<\/li><li>Identity; and<\/li><li>Evidence of a legal name change, if appropriate. In fact, if you plan to change your name, you should do that first, before seeking to get a new Social Security number.<\/li><\/ul><p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p><h3><b>6. Go to the Social Security office<\/b><\/h3><p>You must contact your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/locator\">local Social Security office<\/a>\u00a0for an in-person appointment.<b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p><p><b>NOTE THAT DURING THE COVID-19 OUTBREAK, OFFICES ARE TEMPORARILY CLOSED. YOU WILL NEED TO WAIT UNTIL THEY REOPEN.<\/b><\/p><p>Before applying for a new number, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/retirement\/social-security\/questions-answers\/new-number\/\">\u00a0American Association of Retired Persons<\/a>\u00a0recommends you consider<a href=\"https:\/\/secure.ssa.gov\/acu\/IPS_INTR\/blockaccess\">\u00a0putting a block<\/a>\u00a0on your number, which prevents anyone, including yourself, from accessing your Social Security information online or by phone. You can lift the block when you want by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/agency\/contact\/\">contacting Social Security<\/a>.<\/p><p>If you do need a new number, know that the SSA won\u2019t destroy the original one. They cross-reference the new one with the original one to make sure you get credit for all your earnings under both numbers.
