Four assemblies sit inside that list: the frame, the decking, the guard, and the stairs. Each one counts in a different unit.<\/p>\n<p>The frame counts in pieces and spans. The decking counts in square feet. The guard counts in linear feet. The stairs count in risers. Mixing those units is how a takeoff goes wrong before anyone opens a price book.<\/p>\n<p>Decks rarely lose money on the lumber package. They lose it on the hangers, the clips, the extra footing, and the stair nobody counted. Those lines look small on the sheet and expensive in the truck. Once you have the counts, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplywise.com\/blog\/material-and-labor-cost-calculator\/\">material and labor cost calculator<\/a> prices them out.<\/p>\n<h2>The deck material calculator, step by step<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"pm__steps\">\n<li>\n<h3>Find the square footage<\/h3>\n<p>Multiply length by width for the main rectangle. Add every bump out, wrap around, and stair landing. Break an L shape into rectangles and add the areas.<\/p>\n<p>A 16 ft by 20 ft deck is 320 sq ft. A 4 ft by 4 ft landing adds 16 more. Every later line traces back to that one number.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Convert square feet into boards<\/h3>\n<p>One board covers its face width times its length. Trex lists an actual face width of 5.5 inches on Transcend and Enhance, in 12, 16, and 20 ft lengths. That is 0.458 ft of coverage per foot of board.<\/p>\n<p>Divide the deck area by that coverage, then add waste. Plan on 10 percent for a straight lay. A diagonal or picture frame border needs 15 percent, because angled cuts throw more offcuts.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Count the joists<\/h3>\n<p>Divide the framed length by the on center spacing, then add one for the starting joist. Trex caps a standard lay at 16 inches on center. A diagonal lay drops to 12 inches on center.<\/p>\n<p>Check the span before you pick a size. Southern Pine 2&#215;10 joists reach 14 ft at 16 inches on center. 2&#215;12 joists reach 16 ft 6 in.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Size the beam<\/h3>\n<p>The build up sets how far apart posts can sit. Size the beam before counting posts. DCA 6 Table 3A gives an allowable span for each build up against the joist span it carries.<\/p>\n<p>A Southern Pine double 2&#215;10 spans 8 ft 9 in when the joists framing into it run 8 ft. Push those joists to 16 ft and the same beam drops to 6 ft 1 in.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Count posts and footings<\/h3>\n<p>Divide the beam length by the allowable beam span, round up, and add one. That is the post count, and one footing goes under each post.<\/p>\n<p>Pull the footing diameter from DCA 6 Table 4, which reads the beam span against the joist span it carries. Concrete per footing is pi times the radius squared times the depth. A 12 in footing holds 0.79 cu ft per foot of depth. A 16 in holds 1.40. An 18 in holds 1.77. A 24 in holds 3.14. A 27 in holds 3.98. Divide the total by 27 for cubic yards.<\/p>\n<p>DCA 6 puts every footing on undisturbed soil at least 12 inches down. Go below the frost line if that runs deeper.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Count hangers and clips<\/h3>\n<p>One hanger goes on every joist end landing on a ledger or beam face. DCA 6 wants each hanger at least 60 percent as deep as that member. Add a post base under each post and a cap at every post to beam connection.<\/p>\n<p>Hidden fasteners go at every joist, so the clip line is really a square footage order. Trex packs its universal clip in a 50 sq ft box and a 500 sq ft bucket. Face screwing instead runs two screws per board at every joist crossing.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Measure the guard<\/h3>\n<p>Run a tape around the open perimeter and write down the linear feet. DCA 6 calls for a guard once the deck sits more than 30 inches above grade. Posts are 4&#215;4 nominal at minimum.<\/p>\n<p>Post spacing comes off the railing span chart, not a rule of thumb. Trex allows 96 inches on center for Transcend and 72 for Select. No opening may pass a 4 inch sphere. On a site built wood guard, 2&#215;2 balusters land near a 5.5 inch pitch, or roughly 2.2 balusters per linear foot.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Add the stairs<\/h3>\n<p>Divide the total rise by the maximum riser and round up. Code caps the riser at 7 3\/4 inches and sets a 10 inch minimum tread. Riser to riser variation stays inside 3\/8 inch.<\/p>\n<p>Stringers come out of 2&#215;12 stock, and three cut stringers is the floor. The tread material tightens it further. Trex caps stringer spacing at 12 inches on center for Transcend 1&#215;6. Enhance drops to 9 inches.
