That changes if the surviving spouse remarries before age 60, but remarrying after age 60 won\u2019t affect eligibility.\u00a0<\/p><p>Let\u2019s take a look at how it works:<\/p><h3><b>Eligibility for divorced spousal benefits<\/b><\/h3><p>In order to receive benefits, an ex-spouse must either remain unmarried until age 60, or the\u00a0 second marriage must have ended by death, divorce, or annulment. Ex-spouses born before this date may be able to receive divorced spousal benefits at full retirement age and delay their own retirement benefit until later. That option is not available for people filing for spousal benefits who were born after this date. Otherwise, the spouse may become eligible for survivor benefits at age 60, or age 50 if they are disabled. In all cases, ex-spouses will only be eligible if they are not married\u2014or if their subsequent marriage ended in death, divorce, or annulment.<\/p><p>Ex-spouses who can claim survivor benefits at full retirement age or older will generally get 100 percent of the worker\u2019s basic benefit amount. After age 60, they will receive between 71 percent and 99 percent of the worker\u2019s basic benefit amount. Marrying after age 60 will not impact an ex-spouse\u2019s benefit.<\/p><p>Unlike with the spousal benefit, ex-spouses may apply for survivor benefits at age 60 or later and wait to apply for their own benefit until later\u2014up to age 70. Doing so can earn delayed retirement credits on their own record. Working while receiving benefits may impact the benefit amount, however.\u00a0<\/p><h3>What are the divorced spouse benefit amounts<\/h3><p>Ex-spouses entitled to benefits on their own record will receive those benefits first. So, if an ex-spouse\u2019s benefit would be $2,000 a month, they would be entitled to $1,000 a month as an ex-spouse. If their benefit as a worker is only $700 a month, Social Security will increase their benefit to $1,000 a month.<\/p><p>The maximum spousal benefit\u2014for spouses or ex-spouses\u2014is 50 percent of the worker\u2019s benefit at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplywise.com\/blog\/what-is-full-retirement-age-for-social-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">full retirement<\/a>.\u00a0If an ex-spouse does not claim benefits until after full retirement\u2014say age 70\u2014they will receive\u00a0delayed retirement credits, but their benefit will not increase.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a1cc1b7 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a1cc1b7\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-eb28b0c\" data-id=\"eb28b0c\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6943a52 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6943a52\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If an ex-spouse claims benefits earlier than full retirement, the amount they receive will be permanently reduced.
