Plywood Calculator: Sheets, Coverage, and Cost
Enter your area and sheet size. Sheets needed, total coverage, and cost update as you type.
Sheets, coverage, and cost
Enter your numbers below.
Pick how you want to enter the area.
4 x 8 is standard. 4 x 10 cuts seams on a long run.
Use 10 for a plain rectangle. Use 15 to 20 for hips and heavy cuts.
Sheet count always rounds up. The math carries no price. You always enter your own.
How many sheets of plywood do I need?
Divide the area you are covering by the coverage of one sheet. Add your waste factor, then round up. A 192 square foot subfloor needs 6 sheets of 4 x 8 plywood at zero waste. Add a 10 percent waste factor for cuts and a bad edge and that becomes 7. The plywood calculator above does this instantly as you type. It never shows a fraction of a sheet, because you cannot buy one.
Plywood calculator: how the math works
Every plywood calculator runs the same formula. Take the area, divide by sheet coverage, multiply by one plus the waste factor, then round up to a whole sheet. A 4 x 8 sheet covers 32 square feet, a 4 x 10 covers 40. The rounding step matters: ordinary floating point math can hand back 110.00000000000001 instead of a clean 110. That would buy a sheet nobody needs. This calculator rounds to six decimal places first, so a clean multiple stays clean.
| Sheet size | Coverage per sheet | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 4 x 8 ft | 32 sq ft | Most subfloors, walls, and roof decks. The size every yard stocks. |
| 4 x 10 ft | 40 sq ft | A long wall or roof plane where fewer seams beats a smaller sheet. |

Plywood calculator: measure it, size it, price it
-
Measure the area you’re covering
Tape or wheel the floor, wall, or roof plane, then enter length and width or a total square footage.
-
Pick your sheet size
4 x 8 is the default every yard stocks. Switch to 4 x 10 for a long run where fewer seams are worth it.
-
Set a waste factor
10 percent covers a plain rectangle. Move to 15 or 20 for hips, valleys, closets, and heavy cuts.
-
Add a price per sheet for a cost estimate
Type in your supplier’s price. The plywood calculator turns your sheet count into a material cost line.
How much does a sheet of plywood cost?
Plywood price swings with species, grade, thickness, and region. A 1/2 inch sheet and a 3/4 inch sheet sit at different prices, and so do CDX and sanded panels.

Frequently asked questions about the plywood calculator
Sheet count and coverage
How many sheets of plywood do I need?
Divide your area by the sheet’s coverage: 32 sq ft for a 4 x 8, or 40 for a 4 x 10. Add a waste factor, then round up. A 192 square foot subfloor needs 7 sheets of 4 x 8 plywood at a 10 percent waste factor.
What is a good waste factor for plywood?
10 percent for a plain rectangular room or roof plane. Move up to 15 or 20 percent when the layout has hips, valleys, or a lot of cuts.
Sheet sizes and cost
What size is a standard sheet of plywood?
4 feet by 8 feet, covering 32 square feet, is the size every yard stocks. A 4 x 10 sheet covers 40 square feet. It earns its keep on a long wall or roof plane, where fewer seams matter.
