How much does an inground pool cost?

An inground pool costs roughly $40,000 to $225,000 installed nationally. The shell decides where a job lands. Two manufacturers publish their own numbers. What do the add ons cost?

Three line items swing a pool bid more than any other, all from the 2026 Thursday Pools dealer survey.

Add on 2026 range
Pool heater $3,000 to $5,000 or more
Automatic safety cover $10,000 to $20,000 or more, average $17,580
Deck or patio, 1,200 sq ft $12,500 or more poured concrete, about $13,000 pavers

National ranges, captured Sep 2026. Local prices vary.

What labor rides on the bid?

Wages are published, billable rates are not. Equipment operators earn a $31.87 mean hourly wage and construction laborers $25.02. Cement masons earn $28.87, electricians $34.37, plumbers $34.70 (BLS, May 2025). Burden and margin go on top. Our contractor hourly labor rates by trade page walks that conversion.

How do I price an inground pool job?

  1. Measure the water surface and set the shell

Length times width gives the water surface. Match it to a size band, then pick the shell before any number goes on paper.

  2. Price the site, not the pool

Walk access, soil and slope. Rocky ground or a tight gate moves the same pool by tens of thousands.

  3. Line out equipment and the deck separately

Heater, cover, lighting and decking each get their own line and margin. Bundling them is how pool bids lose money.

  4. Put permits, fill and haul off in writing

Name every exclusion. Spoil haul off, water fill, fencing and the electrical hookup are the four that get argued later.

Our free pool estimate template is where those lines go. The construction calculators hub covers the deck and fence math.
