The flooring calculator formula

Three steps. Measure each room and add the areas. Add waste. Divide by the square feet per carton printed on that product, then round up.

The waste number has a source

Bruce puts it in writing. Flooring is made to standards that permit grading deficiencies up to 5 percent, so 5 percent must be added for cutting and grading allowance, and 10 percent for diagonal installations.

That is not arbitrary. The industry grading standard allows up to 5 percent of the pieces to be off grade. You are buying a tolerance, so order past it.

Carton coverage is a product spec

Quick-Step publishes metric only, so the roughly 20.5 sq ft equivalent is our conversion, not theirs. Solid strip also comes in random lengths, so no piece count per box is published. Only coverage.

Worked example: a 15 by 22 living room plus a 12 by 14 bedroom

That is 330 plus 168, so 498 sq ft. Add the 5 percent cutting and grading allowance and you order against 522.9 sq ft.

On Shaw Prime Plank that is 10.19 cartons, so 11 boxes. COREtec comes to 19.41, so 20. On Bruce Manchester solid strip it is 26.15, so 27. Same rooms, 16 more boxes to haul.

What a diagonal actually costs

Go diagonal and the allowance doubles, so the same job orders against 547.8 sq ft. Here is the part worth knowing at the bid table.

On Shaw that is 10.67 cartons, which still rounds to 11 boxes, so the upgrade costs nothing in material. On COREtec it goes 19.41 to 20.33, so 21 instead of 20. Big cartons absorb a layout change.

The lines that get forgotten

Underlayment is its own count. QuietWalk rolls run 50, 100, 200 and 360 sq ft, so the 522.9 sq ft job takes one 360 and one 200.

Acclimation is a schedule line, not a material line. Bruce asks for 60 to 80 degrees and 30 to 50 percent humidity for 14 days before and during installation. Bruce says to store it in the space where it will perform and not to deliver until the building is enclosed and dry. The conditioned room is the staging area, not your trailer or their garage.

Expansion gap is where crews get burned on a callback. Bruce requires a minimum quarter inch around vertical obstructions, a half inch for floating floors. The wood flooring association calls for three quarters of an inch when the floor goes over screeds or sleepers. Read the one matching your install.
