Drywall Installation Cost: What the Materials Actually Run
Drywall installation cost is two halves that behave nothing alike. Materials price to the penny. Labor is a rate you set on top.

What drywall installation cost is made of
Drywall installation cost is two numbers wearing one label. Material is knowable: a panel, a pail, and a roll of tape all carry a price published today at a named store. Labor is not: your loaded hour times the hours the job takes. Most cost pages blur the two into one square foot figure, which is why two honest bids sit hundreds apart on the same room.
Sheet prices, captured at two suppliers
These are live retail prices read off the sellers on August 28, 2026, not survey averages. Sutherlands prices the same item differently per branch, so its column is a per branch spread: 47 stores on the panel, 17 on the tape, 5 on the compound, and 4 on the screws.
| Item | Sutherlands | McCoy’s, Harlingen TX |
|---|---|---|
| Half inch 4 by 8 panel | $11.95 to $16.99 | $14.99 |
| All purpose compound, 4.5 gal pail | $21.49 to $24.99 | $24.49 |
| Paper joint tape, 250 ft roll | $3.79 to $5.29 | $4.69 |
| Drywall screws, #6 by 1-5/8, 5 lb | $29.99 to $34.29 | $23.99 |
A 4 by 8 panel covers 32 square feet, so board alone lands between $0.37 and $0.53 a square foot. One sheet, priced $5 apart in two towns on one Friday, is why a national average makes a poor bid.
Mud, tape, and screws price off the same square footage
USG publishes coverage against panel area, so finish materials convert cleanly. Compound runs about 10 gallons per 1,000 square feet of panels, putting a 4.5 gallon pail at roughly 450 square feet, about 5 cents a square foot. Paper tape runs about 370 feet per 1,000 square feet, so a 250 foot roll clears 675 square feet, under a penny. Neither supplier publishes a screw count per pound, so buy the box.

A 12 by 14 bedroom, priced
A 12 by 14 room at an 8 foot ceiling comes to 584 square feet of wall and ceiling, or 19 panels in 4 by 8, per our drywall calculator.
| Line | Quantity | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Half inch panels | 19 | $227 to $323 |
| Compound | two pails | $43 to $50 |
| Paper tape | one roll | $4 to $5 |
| Screws | one 5 lb box, no published count per pound | $24 to $34 |
| Materials | 584 sq ft | $298 to $412 |
That is $0.51 to $0.71 a square foot in materials, before an hour of labor. Carry it into every conversation about drywall installation cost: the floor nobody can argue with.
Finish level is where drywall installation cost moves
The Gypsum Association writes the finish ladder in GA-214, and it is written in coats, the honest way to read the price. Level 2 covers fastener heads with one coat. Level 3 adds a separate coat over joints and interior angles and two coats on fasteners. At Level 4, two separate coats go over all flat joints, one over interior angles, and three on fastener heads.
Level 5 keeps every one of those steps and adds a skim coat over the entire surface, the whole wall again, not just the joints. Nobody publishes a compound quantity by finish level, so a Level 5 multiplier is invented. The coat count and the wage are published, enough to price the finish on its own line.
Stop retyping the material list
Once the board count and finish level are settled, hand typing is the slowest part. SimplyWise Cost Estimator turns a photo into an itemized, branded estimate in about 6 seconds. Pricing is $29.99/mo or $239.99/yr, about $20/mo on annual, with a 7-day free trial.
The taper is the hour you are buying
The Bureau of Labor Statistics splits the trade, and the split is the story. In May 2025, tapers ran a $32.82 hourly median against $28.33 for drywall and ceiling tile installers. The quartiles move together: $25.35 and $42.57 for tapers, $22.81 and $35.69 for installers.
BLS counted 83,080 installers against 12,840 tapers, about six hangers for every finisher. A Level 5 wall buys more hours of the scarcer, dearer worker, the real mechanism behind every finish level step in drywall installation cost.
