Heads, valves, controller, and what a zone costs

Head count is the radius squared. A rotor holds 900 sq ft, a spray 225.

Opens at the May 2025 median wage, which is not a billed rate.

Irrigation system cost is a zone count, not a lawn size

Two yards of the same square footage can price hundreds apart. Sun, shade, beds and turf want different run times, so each area becomes its own zone.

A zone is whatever one valve turns on: a valve, a box, a lateral run and a controller station.

What one zone costs in parts

Part Named product Low High
Zone valve Rain Bird 100-DV 1 in. $17.05 $27.72
Valve box NDS 111BC 10 in. $20.95 $26.18
Lateral pipe, a foot Blu-Lock 1 in. 300 ft $0.57 $0.75
Fixed spray head 1804 body plus 15Q nozzle $2.92 $4.30
Rotor head 5004-PC, standard nozzles $10.15 $16.75
Rotary nozzle head 1804 body plus R-VAN14 $6.50 $10.88

Low is Sprinkler Warehouse, high SiteOne, read September 11, 2026. No publisher states an installed price a zone, so this page prints none.

Head type sets the head count

Rain Bird rates each nozzle at a spacing of half its diameter of throw, the radius. Each head holds one square of that spacing, with part circle arcs on the edges.

Head Radius Precip Turf a square
15Q fixed spray, 30 psi 15 ft 1.58 in. an hour 225 sq ft
5000-MPR-30 rotor, 45 psi 30 ft 0.62 in. an hour 900 sq ft
R-VAN14, 45 to 270 degrees 8 ft to 14 ft matched 0.6 196 sq ft

Four times the heads on a spray zone, and the reason you never mix the two on a valve.

Rain Bird prints a matched 0.6 in. an hour across 5000 rotors and R-VAN nozzles, so they share a zone, on MPR nozzles bought separately.

The spine you buy once, and the code that prices it

Point of connection, main line, backflow and controller get bought once. The controller steps in jumps: a Rain Bird ESP-TM2 runs $108.85 to $175.74 at 6 stations and $268.85 to $392.04 at 12. Zone seven is the expensive one.

The backflow assembly is the code line, and its class is not your pick. Model plumbing code accepts an atmospheric vacuum breaker, a pressure vacuum breaker assembly or a reduced pressure principle assembly. Louisiana amended that section: once a system has separate zones, only a pressure vacuum breaker or a reduced pressure assembly passes.

Texas writes the hazard test into rule. Under 30 TAC 344.51(d)(2) a property on an on site sewage facility makes the system a health hazard, so only a reduced pressure assembly qualifies. A pressure vacuum breaker sits 12 inches above all downstream piping under 344.50(b)(3)(B) and the highest opening. Under 344.50(e) a licensed tester checks it on installation, then annually on a health hazard system.

Price the class your inspector accepts. Four listed 1 in. Febco 765 assemblies ran $221.62 to $508.09 that day, and the spread is configuration.

What the labor side pays

Irrigation falls under Landscaping and Groundskeeping Workers, whose federal job definition names sprinkler installation outright. Its May 2025 national hourly median was $18.82, the 90th $27.28. If the point of connection goes to a licensed plumber, that occupation median is $30.67. Both are employee wages, and OEWS skips the self-employed.

What pushes irrigation system cost up

A vibratory plow slices a slot and pulls pipe behind the blade. A trencher opens a real ditch, which roots, shallow utilities and hardscape force, plus spoil and backfill hours. No maker publishes an hours a foot figure, so the calculator asks for yours.

Slope forces check valves so low heads stop draining the lateral. The quiet one is meter size, which caps gallons a minute, then heads a zone, then zone count.

Price a sprinkler system in four steps

  1. Split the yard into zones

Group turf with turf, beds with beds, then read the meter.

  2. Pick the head type, then count

Turf area over the radius squared gives heads per zone, rounded up.

  3. Price the spine separately

Point of connection, main line, backflow and controller are one line.

  4. Put labor on your own sheet

Set crew hours off the method and site, then apply your rate.

Common questions about irrigation system cost

Zones and heads

How is an irrigation system priced?

By the zone. Each zone buys a valve, a box, a lateral run, a controller station and its heads.

How many sprinkler heads does one zone need?

Divide the turf by the radius squared. A 15 ft spray square is 225 sq ft, a 30 ft rotor square 900.

Can I put spray heads and rotors on the same zone?

No. A 15Q lays down 1.58 in. an hour and a 5000 rotor 0.62, so half the zone floods and the rest stays dry.

Backflow, code and labor

Why does a sprinkler system installation cost include a backflow preventer?

The system is a direct cross connection to drinking water. Model code accepts an atmospheric vacuum breaker, a pressure vacuum breaker or a reduced pressure assembly, and local code narrows that.

Does the backflow assembly have to be tested?

In Texas, yes. Rule 344.50(e) has a licensed tester check it on installation, then annually on a health hazard system.

Can SimplyWise price an irrigation job from a photo?

Yes. SimplyWise Cost Estimator turns a photo into an itemized estimate in about 6 seconds, with material and labor lines. Free to try, at $29.99/mo.
