A handyman hourly rate is a wage with four more costs stacked on it. Here is the federal wage table, the arithmetic that turns it into a shop rate, and the state rule that caps the job.

What the handyman hourly rate data actually says
Every handyman hourly rate starts life as a wage. The closest federal occupation to handyman work is Maintenance and Repair Workers, General, code 49-9071. The May 2025 release puts it at a $23.84 median hourly wage and a $25.86 mean, across 1,529,700 workers.
Read that title before you lean on it. The survey counts payroll employees and excludes the self employed, so the owner running one truck is not in it. That gap is this page.

Two rates there are federal: self employment tax at 15.3%, and the 76 cent mileage rate. The billable fraction, the weekly miles and the margin are yours, and each moves the answer hard.
The billable fraction is the line most handymen never adjust. You get paid for 40 hours and bill 26, because drive time, parts runs and quoting are hours no customer funds.

What legitimately moves a handyman hourly rate
Trade mix is the biggest lever. The wage data separates general maintenance from the licensed trades:

Painting pays no better than general maintenance. Carpentry and the licensed trades do.
Geography moves it as well. State hourly means run from $30.49 in the District of Columbia down to $21.23 in West Virginia, against $25.86 nationally. After hours calls carry their own multiplier.
The license threshold that caps the job, not the rate
Several state boards publish a dollar figure below which you may work without a contractor license. It caps the size of the job you may legally take, never your rate.

Read the exceptions, because that is where handymen get caught. Arizona, California and Nevada void the exemption once the work needs a building permit, or if you split one job into smaller contracts. Nevada also carves out plumbing, electrical and heating work.

What is the average handyman hourly rate?
Federal data puts maintenance and repair workers at a $23.84 median hourly wage in May 2025, mean $25.86. Those are wages paid to employees, so a billed rate starts above them.
Why does nobody publish a real handyman billing rate?
The publishers who do are marketplaces selling leads, and a survey of their own users is not a rate authority. Government wage tables are auditable, so this page uses those instead.
What do handymen earn at the top and bottom?
