What dumpster rental prices actually buy

A roll off quote is one flat number. Dumpsters.com lists a base rate covering "delivery and pickup", "disposal fees for the debris you toss", "an included rental period of seven to 10 days" and a weight limit. Everything past that tonnage bills separately.

That is the part contractors underbid. The container price is knowable. The overage is not, because it turns on the weigh ticket, and demolition debris weighs several times what a cleanout does in the same yard.

Dumpster rental prices by size

Two national publishers post real dollar tables, each cited with its own figure.

Container Dumpsters.com, Apr 2026 Hometown, Dec 2025 Weight included Typical size Holds
10 yard $329 to $1,307 $250 to $450 1 to 3 tons 14 by 7.5 by 3.5 ft 50 to 70 bags
20 yard $374 to $1,362 $350 to $550 2 to 5 tons 22 by 7.5 by 4.5 ft 110 to 130 bags
30 yard $450 to $1,460 $450 to $650 2 to 5 tons 22 by 7.5 by 6 ft 170 to 190 bags
40 yard $512 to $1,583 $550 to $750 4 to 8 tons 22 by 7.5 by 8 ft 230 to 250 bags

Why the two tables disagree

Look at the 20 yard row. One publisher tops out at $550, the other at $1,362, and neither is wrong: Dumpsters.com says its ranges come from "rates paid by real current customers working on a variety of projects", which pulls in heavy loads and hard markets. Read the low end as a cheap metro on light debris, the high end as a dense city at full tonnage.

Bin There Dump That shows the other half: a published fee taxonomy, permit, travel, prohibited item, extra tonnage, hook and extra day.

Overage is where the bid goes wrong

Every published rate carries a tonnage cap. Dumpsters.com bills past it with "a pro-rated, per-ton overage fee". Hometown reports that some haulers prorate and some charge a whole ton, which is why the calculator shows the low side prorated and the high side whole.

What a ton costs traces back to the landfill. Fairfax County, Virginia posts $98 per ton for trash in fiscal 2027, with a $39 small load minimum. King County, Washington posts $243.38 per ton. Two tons over lands between $196 and $487 on those schedules alone.

What fits, and where it fits

Sizes above are Budget Dumpster figures, in 33 gallon bags. Dimensions are typical: Hometown's December 2022 chart publishes 12 by 8 by 3.5 feet up to 22 by 8 by 8.

Placement matters as much as capacity. Budget Dumpster wants a spot 60 feet long and 10.5 feet wide for a 20 yard, plus 25 to 30 feet of overhead clearance. On a public right of way you need a permit, which Dumpsters.com puts at $20 to $150 or more.

Price a job that needs a container

  1. Size on weight before volume

Concrete, tile and shingles cap out on tonnage while the box looks half empty. That is why a 10 yard is the heavy debris answer.

  2. Ask what the allowance is, in tons

Published allowances on a 20 yard span 2 to 5 tons. Get yours in writing before delivery.

  3. Price the overage you expect to use

Carry it as its own bid line. Nobody wins that argument after the ticket.

  4. Match the window to the schedule

Published windows run 5 to 10 days. Slip past pickup day and it bills daily, at a rate the hauler sets.
