The drywall calculator formula

A drywall calculator runs two steps. Get gross board area, then divide by the coverage of the panel you hang.

Gross board area is wall area plus ceiling area. Wall area is room perimeter times ceiling height. Ceiling area is length times width.

Then divide by panel coverage and round up. Panels are 4 ft wide with tapered long edges, and USG lists lengths from 8 ft to 16 ft.

Here is the step most calculators get wrong. Do not deduct doors and windows. Hangers run board past an opening and cut it out afterward, because a seam at a corner cracks. That cutout is waste.

Worked example: a 12 by 14 bedroom

Perimeter is 52 ft. At an 8 ft ceiling that is 416 sq ft of wall, and the ceiling adds 168, so 584 sq ft gross.

In 4 by 12 panels that is 584 divided by 48, or 12.17, so 13 sheets. In 4 by 8 it is 584 divided by 32, or 18.25, so 19 sheets. Six extra pieces to carry and tape.

Worked example: a 24 by 24 garage

Perimeter is 96 ft. At a 9 ft wall that is 864 sq ft, and the ceiling adds 576, for 1,440 sq ft gross.

In 4 by 12 panels that lands on exactly 30 sheets. Compound at the USG rate is 14.4 gallons, so three 4.5 gallon pails leaves you 0.9 gallon short on the last coat. Tape is 533 ft, so a 500 ft roll is 33 ft short. Both are a second trip.

Mud and tape come off the same square footage

USG publishes coverage against panel area, not joint length, which keeps the math simple.

Ready-mixed all-purpose compound runs about 10 gallons per 1,000 sq ft of panels. The lightweight version runs 9.4. Setting-type powder runs 72 lb, five 25 lb bags on that garage. Paper tape runs about 370 ft.

Those rates assume a three coat finish. At Level 5 the Gypsum Association requires a skim coat over the entire surface on top of Level 4, so compound goes up while tape does not.

Screws follow the spacing, not a habit

GA-216 is plain: screws not more than 12 in on center for ceilings, 16 in on center for walls at 16 in framing. At 24 in framing it is 12 in for both.

Run that against a 4 by 12 wall panel: 10 studs behind the sheet, 4 screws down each, so about 40 screws. Fastener heads also take three coats, each in a different direction.

Run it in this order

1. Measure the perimeter, not each wall

   Perimeter times ceiling height gives wall area in one step. Add length times width for the ceiling.

2. Pick the panel before you divide

   Longer panels cut butt joints, and butt joints are the ones that telegraph.

3. Run mud and tape off the gross area

   Buy the container size that clears the number, not the one that nearly does.

4. Price the finish level separately

   Level 4 and Level 5 are not the same labor or the same compound. Put it on the quote.
