What a deck estimate app actually has to do

Most deck tools count boards. That is a material calculator, and you already own one. What a deck builder needs after a Saturday walk-through is different: a priced bid, in front of the client, before the neighbor’s guy gets there Monday.

So the bar is a full estimate. Materials, labor, and fees on separate lines. Quantities you can defend. A document the client can sign. Anything short of that just moves the retyping to a different screen.

How to price a deck with the app, start to finish

Here is the flow on a real jobsite, not a demo.

1. Start the job at the curb

What the app measures and what you still judge

Be honest with yourself about the split, because the money is on your side of it.

The app prices what it can see and what you describe. It does not read soil bearing. The app does not know the ledger sits on a cantilever. It cannot tell you the county wants a footing inspection before you backfill. Those calls belong to you.

Nor does it settle structure. American Wood Council guidance sizes prescriptive deck framing primarily on a 40 psf live load plus 10 psf dead load. AWC notes plainly that “ASCE 7 requires 100 psf, while IRC requires 40 psf”. Which code your jurisdiction runs changes joists, beams, and your material line. That is a decision, not a detection.

The rate the estimate has to clear

Whatever number comes back, it has to clear your loaded hour. Median pay for carpenters was $60,580 a year, or $29.12 an hour, in May 2025, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The lowest 10 percent earned under $40,410 and the highest 10 percent more than $99,910.

Note where deck work usually sits. Carpenters in foundation, structure, and building exterior contractors ran a median of $58,790, below residential building construction at $60,600 and well below nonresidential at $63,780. Exterior work pays under the trade, so margin discipline matters more here, not less.

Self-employed workers are 27 percent of carpenter employment, per BLS. That is the other half of the story. If you are the estimator, the crew lead, and the collections department, every hour spent retyping a bid is an hour off the saw.

Which deck jobs this fits best

On that fourth row, remember OSHA requires fall protection at six feet in construction. Staging and harnesses are equipment, setup hours, and often a second body. Put them on the quote as their own line rather than burying them in a square foot rate.
