The base decides whether it lasts
Crews build a base in three layers. First they excavate: 7 to 10 inches under a patio or walkway, 10 to 14 under a driveway. Then they compact a dense graded gravel sub base. Foot traffic needs 4 to 6 inches, vehicles 8 to 12. Last they screed an inch of coarse sand or screenings.
Haul off and dump fees belong on the estimate when spoil leaves. Gravel prices by the ton, so depth drives volume as hard as area. Underbidding it turns a profitable patio into a warranty callback.
Drainage is a line item, not a nicety
Pitch a patio away from the house, roughly a quarter inch per foot. Where low spots hold water, route a drain to daylight. Behind a retaining wall, drainage turns structural. Gravel backfill and a base pipe relieve the pressure that pushes a wall over. Walls over about 4 feet usually trigger a permit.
Waste is a line, not a rounding habit. Add 5 to 10 percent on a plain rectangle. Curves and herringbone want 10 to 15 percent, irregular stone 15 to 25. Order exact area on a cut heavy pattern and the crew runs short.
