Which iPhones Have LiDAR? A Contractor Reference (2026)
Every iPhone and iPad with a LiDAR Scanner, verified against Apple spec sheets, plus what the sensor does for field measurement and fast takeoffs.
- LiDAR is Pro-only: every Pro and Pro Max iPhone from the 12 Pro to the 17 Pro has it.
- No standard, Plus, Air, mini, or SE iPhone has LiDAR.
- The iPad Pro got LiDAR first, in March 2020. Every iPad Pro since carries it; iPad, iPad Air, and iPad mini do not.
- For contractors, LiDAR drives fast room scanning that feeds takeoffs for paint, flooring, drywall, and trim.
Which iPhones have LiDAR? The short answer
If you are asking which iPhones have LiDAR, the rule is simple: it is a Pro-only feature. Every Pro and Pro Max iPhone from the iPhone 12 Pro forward carries a LiDAR Scanner, and no standard, Plus, Air, mini, or SE model has ever shipped with one. As of 2026 that is six generations, from the iPhone 12 Pro (October 2020) through the iPhone 17 Pro (September 2025).
It matters on the jobsite because LiDAR powers fast, walk-through room scanning: one pass captures wall lengths, ceiling heights, and openings. Without it, apps fall back to slower photo-only capture. So the real question behind which iPhones have LiDAR is usually “can this phone scan a room,” and the answer is yes only on a Pro model.

iPhone LiDAR device table
This table shows which iPhones have LiDAR next to the models that do not.

|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 Pro / 17 Pro Max | 2025 | Yes | Current Pro generation. |
| iPhone 16 Pro / 16 Pro Max | 2024 | Yes | Depth and low-light capture. |
| iPhone 15 Pro / 15 Pro Max | 2023 | Yes | USB-C speeds up scan exports. |
| iPhone 14 Pro / 14 Pro Max | 2022 | Yes | Common jobsite workhorse. |
| iPhone 13 Pro / 13 Pro Max | 2021 | Yes | Same module as the 12 Pro. |
| iPhone 12 Pro / 12 Pro Max | 2020 | Yes | First iPhone with LiDAR. |
| iPhone 17, Air, and all standard models | 2020 on | No | Photo-only capture. |
| iPhone Plus and mini models | varies | No | No depth sensor. |
| iPhone SE (all generations) | 2020 on | No | Budget line, no LiDAR. |
Read the model name and look for “Pro.” A Pro or Pro Max from the iPhone 12 generation onward has LiDAR; anything else does not.
Which iPads have LiDAR?
The iPad Pro was the first Apple device with LiDAR, about seven months ahead of the iPhone 12 Pro. Apple added it in March 2020, and every iPad Pro since has carried the sensor.
- iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation) and 12.9-inch (4th generation), March 2020. The first Apple devices with LiDAR.
- Every later iPad Pro, through the current M-series tablets.
- Standard iPad, iPad Air, and iPad mini do not include LiDAR.
How to check whether your iPhone has LiDAR
-
Read the model name in Settings
Open Settings, tap General, then About, and read the Model Name. If it ends in “Pro” or “Pro Max” and is iPhone 12 or newer, it has LiDAR. Any other model does not.
-
Look at the back camera array
Pro models have three lenses in a triangle plus a small dark circle near the flash, which is the LiDAR Scanner. Non-Pro models have no such aperture.
What LiDAR does for contractors
Knowing which iPhones have LiDAR only helps if you know what it buys you. LiDAR is a depth sensor that maps a room in real time, so software builds a 3D model with measured wall lengths and ceiling heights. It works in any indoor lighting, including total darkness.
Where it helps most:
- Room dimensions and floor area for paint, flooring, and drywall takeoffs.
- Ceiling heights captured in seconds, not point-by-point laser shots.
- Door and window openings, identified automatically.
Where it falls short:
- Fine detail like trim profiles and outlet boxes sits below its resolution.
- Mirrors, glass, and polished surfaces confuse the depth signal.
- Permit-grade and structural work needs a tripod-mounted scanner.
A LiDAR iPhone is a fast, sketch-grade capture tool for residential and small-commercial interiors. For the measured tolerances, see our breakdown of iPhone LiDAR accuracy for construction.
Pairing LiDAR with photo-to-estimate workflows
The scan is only the first half of the job. SimplyWise Cost Estimator handles the second half: snap a few photos with a Pro iPhone and it turns the photo into an itemized estimate in about 6 seconds, with quantities for paint, flooring, drywall, and baseboard. Receipt scanning and mileage tracking keep your cost numbers current. For the front end, compare our photo to estimate apps and takeoff software rankings.
